On October 12, 2022, the Spanish National Day was held in Doha, Qatar, at the prestigious Ritz Carlton Doha Hotel, organized by the embassy in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce of Spain in Qatar.

The Ambassador of Spain to Qatar, Mr. Javier Carbajosa Sánchez, made his speech.

 

It was inaugurated with a speech by Ambassador Javier Carbajosa Sánchez where he spoke about the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries and where he remarked that “At the political level, 15 bilateral agreements and MOUs have been signed during the past two years, ranging very diverse areas such as education, economy or science. In addition, Spain has agreed with Qatar a visa-waiver agreement on diplomatic and special passports. Moreover, Spain supports the on-going negotiations between the State of Qatar and the European Commission to lift visa requirement for Qatari nationals”and adds that “during 2021, bilateral trade rose by 34%, scoring a value close to 1 billion €. Furthermore, during the first seven months of 2022 bilateral trade rose by 31% driven by the increasing demand of Qatari products from Spain”.

The ambassador mentioned that “Many Spanish companies have also been contributing to the development of the infrastructure projects designed to service the World Cup, such as the metro, airport, roads, etc. Two of the eight 2022 Qatar World Cup stadiums have been designed by the Spanish architecture firm Fenwick Iribarren Architects: Education City Stadium and the 974 Ras Abu Aboud Stadium. Moreover, the Qatar National Team has chosen Marbella, Spain, to gear up for the FIFA World Cup”.

He ends his speech by mentioning “ the ever-stronger relations between Spain and Qatar will promote and expand mutually beneficial political, economic and social cooperation. and adds that he expects “a promising new year of common projects and initiatives that will bring our countries closer together and contribute to improving the well-being of our people. Last but not least, on behalf of the Government of the Kingdom of Spain, I take this opportunity to share my best wishes and warmest message of friendship to His Highness the Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani and to the Government and people of the State of Qatar”.

This great celebration was attended by approximately 600 people and special guests such as the Minister of Justice H.E. Masoud bin Mohammed Al Ameri, the Minister of State and National Library President of Qatar H.E. Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Department of Protocol Director, Ambassador Ibrahim Fakhro
